Honorable Mention Nest Treezaa (T. E. Ballard) Blue jays are killing each other in trees three found this morning at the base of the pine like the center of a peach, their pink skin brave and motionless. How many times have I protected you from death so in your mind these birds are not your brother, featherless your hands deep in the fold of his wing saying in a language I do not speak come back to me. What I fear does not move or wander over the edge but sits still in a space between falling, waking, reaching the end of explicable madness. Listen to the way two names are not said. I know nothing— nothing understand the three birds which fit in the palm of my hand, fly beyond loss.
